Data sources
Official road data comes from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. In addition we read openly published news feeds from regional and local newsrooms and keep only traffic-relevant items: headline, publication, time, place and a link to the publisher. Article text is never copied or stored, and paywalled sources are only used where an agreement and technical access are in place.
Open hazard warnings for weather, flood, landslide and avalanche come from MET Norway and NVE (MetAlerts).
Place search, route calculation and ferry crossings on a route are based on open OpenStreetMap data, used under the Open Database Licence (ODbL). Road numbers, place names and ferry quay names are shown as they appear in the source.
Recommended arrival time at the quay and reservation rules for each ferry crossing come from the ferry operators' own customer information (Bastø Fosen, Fjord1, Norled, Torghatten Nord, Torghatten Midt, Boreal Sjø, Color Line and Fjord Line). Each crossing links back to the operator for timetables and booking.
Ferry deviations and cancellations come from the ferry operators' own public service messages (currently Torghatten). Only the route, the period and a short excerpt are shown, with a link back to the operator's page. Reis Nordland's traffic messages are not read automatically because they require an agreement.
Charging stations and petrol and diesel stations along a route come from OpenStreetMap through the open Overpass API, used under the Open Database Licence (ODbL).
Open news feeds currently read: NRK Vestland, NRK Rogaland, NRK Møre og Romsdal, NRK Trøndelag, NRK Nordland, NRK Troms, NRK Innlandet, NRK Vestfold og Telemark, NRK Sørlandet, NRK Østfold, NRK Oslo og Viken, NRK Buskerud, NRK Vestfold, NRK Telemark, NRK Finnmark, NRK Nyheter.
Licence for open public data (NLOD 2.0)
Public data from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration and from MET Norway and NVE is reused under the Norwegian Licence for Open Government Data (NLOD) 2.0. We follow its terms in general: the source is always named, the time of the last update is shown, the data is not presented in a way that suggests the source endorses us, and personal data is not reused.
Where data is changed for display — translation, shortening, grouping or map placement — the change is ours and not the source's. Errors in this service should be reported to us, not to the source.
What we read, store and calculate
- Norwegian Public Roads Administration (DATEX II) — Open public data under NLOD 2.0. We store the message as published: identifier, title, description, place, road number, times and status. We shorten and translate it for display and calculate expected waiting time ourselves. No personal data is stored. Each request identifies VEYAN, and we only ask for changes since the last update.
- MET Norway and NVE (MetAlerts) — Open data under CC BY 4.0. Source and time of update are shown wherever a warning appears.
- OpenStreetMap — Maps, place search, route geometry, charging and fuel stations, used under the Open Database Licence (ODbL). Base map tiles are served by CARTO, which allows this use with credit to both.
- Ferry operators and national public transport data — Departures, quay names, arrival rules and public service messages. Only route, period and a short excerpt are stored, always with a link back to the operator.
- Open news feeds — Headline, publication, time, place and a link. Article text is never copied or stored, and paywalled sources are not read automatically.
No source has approved or endorsed VEYAN, and nothing here should be read as such. We do not republish the raw datasets, and we do not reuse personal data. Errors in this service are ours: report them to us, not to the source.
